Expect this syncopated ensemble to roll through classics like Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone” and “C Jam Blues” as well as George Shearing’s “Lullaby of Birdland,” Nat King Cole’s “Frim Fram Sauce” and Jimmy Van Heusen’s “I Though About You.” And count on them concluding their setting on a blazing note with an exhilarating performance of “Oh, Lady Be Good.” Pizzarelli’s Swing 7 is a septet dedicated to the art of swinging the Great American Songbook, with hip interpretations of the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, Jerome Kern and Cole Porter. His latest and most revealing album to date is 2021’s Better Days Ahead: Solo Guitar Takes on Pat Metheny. ![]() John released his first solo album, I’m Hip (Please Don't Tell My Father), in 1983 and went onto acclaim with 28 recordings as a leader to his credit, including tributes to Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mercer, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Duke Ellington, the Beatles (1998’s Meets the Beatles) and Paul McCartney (2015’s Midnight McCartney). A lifelong purveyor of the seven-string guitar (with a low A string to cover bass lines or create full, lush chords), he turned his son John onto the instrument as a teenager. His father, the late, great jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, a former house guitarist in The Tonight Show Band during the Johnny Carson years, made his mark in the realm of swing first with the Vaughan Monroe Orchestra and later with the likes of Benny Goodman and fellow guitarists Les Paul and George Barnes.
